Want to help tackle climate change but don’t have the time to become a climate scientist?
As humanity is faced with unprecedented challenges, "Climate Fresk" is a workshop that aims at raising awareness and understanding among people about climate change, therefore enabling impacting positive actions at the personal and collective level. Conceived in France and based on the IPCC report, it explains the causes and consequences of climate change. It gives the opportunity to learn a lot in a short period of time and is meant for both novices and experts.
Now in its 8th-year, professionals from large corporations to SMEs, non-profits, and charities – together with the public sector make the annual pilgrimage across the country to one of the UK’s most comprehensive events dedicated to environmental management and the drive to net-zero.
Bringing together the experts, products, technologies, services, solutions, and innovations making their mark today.
Get up to speed. Stay informed. And, start taking real action so that you too will enjoy the many benefits of a sustainability strategy that in turn will help our planet.
A relaxing and absorbing pastime, create an eco-friendly toy that will while away hours creating giant, festival-sized bubbles at home. We will start by discussing what makes a great bubble and howthey float: and then go on to make the perfect bubble mixture from simple ingredients. Finally, youngsters will make their own bubble wand, and turn heads by testing their creations out on the Arc terrace! Youngsters take home a copy of the recipe and a bubble wand they created themselves.
Parents are asked to stay and supervise their young craftspeople during this session to help them get the best results.
After all that creativity, families can enjoy refreshments at our Arc café.

Undergraduates from the Fashion Design course will showcase their up-cycled garments created from donated materials and clothing to The Salvation Army.
Displaying creativity, colour, and texture, all garments will be for sale after the event in The Salvation Army Pop-Up Shop.
As part of Green Week, we will reflect on slavery wealth and English rural life at the turn of the nineteenth century. Join us for a 7 ½ -mile (3 ½ hour) country walk to explore Hampshire’s slavery history with Senegalese researcher Dr. Ibrahima Seck, BAFTA award-winning filmmaker Professor Robert Beckford and Professor Corinne Fowler, author of Our Island Stories: Country Walks Through Colonial Britain (Penguin Allen Lane, April 2024).
During the walk – mostly flat, some country lanes, slight hills and one longer hill, some footpaths, easy-moderate walking difficulty – we will explore the historical connections between Senegal, Louisiana and Hampshire. Dogs are welcome. Please bring your own picnic. We end near a pub!
The route passes through villages and across fields to reach estates owned by Sir Francis Baring, founder of Barings Bank. In 1803, his son Sir Alexander Baring negotiated and financed the Louisiana Purchase, the world’s largest ever land sale which allowed the slavery system to develop in the Deep South. By 1833, a quarter of the income from Barings Bank came from cotton produced by enslaved people in the Deep South.
Participants are then invited to the Wessex Learning Centre, Winchester Cathedral, for about 4.00pm, which you may attend without having walked. Dr Seck will talk about how his research has helped to centre the experiences of enslaved people in Louisiana at a museum called Whitney Plantation and there will be conversation between the academics, opening out to group discussion.
Those who can stay are warmly invited to a Festal Evensong to mark Michaelmas, where there will be a welcome for participants and prayers for freedom and justice.
The meeting point of this walk will be: Northbrook Arms, East Stratton Village.
There is a bus route which will drop you nearby or alternatively you can park either along Stratton Lane (without blocking the road), or behind the pub. Please don’t park around the village green.
No booking is necessary, but please arrive on time. Friday 29th September.

Simply bring along your one choice of fabric 100cm wide by 28cm, light to medium weight cotton fabric is ideal to work with. Avoid sheer, lace or stretchy fabrics as these are not suitable. Some thicker fabrics e.g. velvet are ok but its worth considering how much light will come through if the material is too thick. (I can advise suitability of fabric for a small charge).

A hands-on experience at WSA GREEN WEEK 2023: CYNOTYPE PRINT WORKSHOP, where you'll learn the art of environmentally friendly printmaking. Part Two Friday 29 Sept 10-12
When we search out wildlife, we often unintentionally impact and harm the life we are looking for, either by scaring them or harming them with contamination. We, therefore, do not allow the animals to collaborate with us and show their own presence. This workshop aims to provide the tools needed to record wildlife without impacting on the species in their natural habitat.
Using two methods, we shall be allowing nature to make its mark of its presence with our absence.
1. Cynotype prints. These are to be laid out and under leaves and in small spaces within the natural environment. Objects from the area that they are being laid shall be placed onto the paper and they will be left to develop in the sun as it moves throughout the day. Small amounts of honey may be added to the paper in order to attract insects whilst we are absent.
2. Whilst this happens, we shall be crafting tunnels to be placed with paper in undergrowths and left overnight. Bait that will not harm wildlife will be placed in the tunnels on the paper, and vegetable oil and black food dye will be mixed together and painted and both entrances. These will be placed at the end of the first afternoon.
3. The Cynotype prints will be collected and put on the walls in the studios with the participants names on them and the time they were left in the sun underneath them.
4. The next morning (Part Two Friday 29 Sept 10-12 )we will be going out to collect the footprint tunnels and bringing them back to the studio to examine and discuss what animals have passed through our work.
Both of these methods have been extensively tested and proven not to impact on the natural environments that they are placed in. They highlight a thriving community of animals that we do not need to search out to know that they are there, Previous success’ with these projects have proven the presence of a species until known was not living in the area and has therefore extended the lands protected status.

I am definitely not a master but love Sashiko and Boro which are traditional Japanese ways of repair. Sashiko translates directly as “little stabs.” - normally a white cotton thread on an indigo fabric. This visible mending technique has been practised in Japan for thousands of years and stems from Wabi-Sabi - a beauty of things imperfect, impermanent and incomplete.
Why Sashiko?
Sashiko stitch is an antidote to the fast fashion world. It is used to reinforce points of wear on a garment and to repair worn places or tears with patches - creating Boro. The running stitch is also used for decorative purposes. I use the technique for both and by playing with the stitch have developed my star stitch normally found on my shorts and jackets. Clothes stitched and repaired in this way can be said to embrace the concept of ‘Wabi Sabi'.
In this workshop learn how to stitch your favourite piece or stitch a chambray collar, scrunchie or scarf provided (Made in the UK from deadstock fabric of course!). All materials will be provided and there will be refreshments. £10 a ticket. The cost of the course will be donated to Oxfam in support of #secondhandseptember

The last few years with the covid pandemic and present financial crisis has emphasised how important nature is for our mental health and wellbeing.
In addition, the extreme climate events across the world really highlight the importance of outdoor space and the necessity to work with nature to preserve the natural environment.
The Garden for Mind project will create a space that not only provides the opportunity to support mental health and wellbeing, but also to help educate on the climate change challenges and Biodiversity loss.

Join Winchester City Council for an update on our plans to be carbon neutral. The council has set a target to be a carbon neutral district by 2030 and in its own activities by 2024.
Since the climate emergency was announced, the city council has implemented a range of measures to reduce its carbon footprint as part of a carbon neutral action plan– installing over 2000 solar panels, launching a retrofit programme to reduce energy consumption in its council homes, installing 60 new electric vehicle charging points in car parks and switching council buildings to 100% renewable energy – to name a few. Come along to find out how the council plans to build on these achievements to be Greener Faster.
The event will be chaired by the Cabinet Member for the Climate Emergency and is one of the council's regular Open Forum events at which there is an opportunity for discussion and to submit questions to the council for answer.
The Open Forum will also be joined by a representative of the U.K. Climate Change Committee, an independent, statutory body established under the Climate Change Act 2008. Its purpose is to advise government on progress in meeting the UK's emissions targets.

Join us for #MakePollutersPay Action Day as we call for the government to make big fossil fuel corporations pay for the impacts of climate crisis. Right now the poorest and least responsible communities are paying, while the biggest polluters are making vast profits. By making polluters pay this could change.
We’ll be holding a Walk of Witness, from St Luke’s Hedge End to St John’s Hedge End, starting and ending with a gathering and prayers.
We will gather at St Luke’s at 10:30, and after a prayer and hearing readings of testimonies from those on the front lines of climate change, we will walk through Hedge End to St John’s (a walk of 1.3 miles), where we will gather again with the opportunity to have a coffee and sign a letter to our MP asking for government commitment to make UK-based fossil fuel companies and other big polluters pay in order to finance the UN’s Loss and Damage fund. We will be finished by 12:00.
This event will be peaceful, inclusive and legal. We welcome people of all faiths and none to join in. The walk will take place using pavements and without causing any disruption to members of the public.
It would be great to see you there

At Emmaus Hampshire, concern for the environment has always been high on our agenda.
When we designed our Community building, we made sure to prioritise green credentials. Our building features a sedum 'green' roof, solar thermal panels, a foul drainage system, and permeable paving, all designed to minimise our environmental impact.
In our social enterprises, we focus on resale, reuse, and recycling to ensure that as little as possible goes to waste or ends up in landfill: Metals from donated goods that cannot be sold are carefully stripped and either repurposed (like using metal legs for creating new furniture pieces) or sold for scrap, generating additional income for our Community. Clothing is meticulously sorted and sold in our three stores. Any items that don't meet our display standards are sold as ragging, providing another vital source of funds for our Community.
The Emmaus Hampshire Repair Shop is filled with enthusiastic and skilled individuals who upcycle or repurpose furniture with great care and attention. This gives items a new lease of life, saving them from landfill, and produces wonderful bespoke pieces for our stores.
We have three shops in:
Winchester - Mon to Sat 9:00am - 5:00pm, Sun 10am - 4pm
Southampton - Mon to Sat 9:30am - 4:30pm
