Second Hand September is a moment for all of us to come together to choose a more planet-friendly way to shop.
There was a time when what we wore meant something. It said something about us and our community. But what does it mean today? A throwaway culture? Planet wrecking waste?
This September, take a stance against the impact of fast fashion by shopping second hand. Reclaim what style stands for. Dress for the world you want to see.
Explore slow fashion, sustainable fashion and ethical fashion, shop and donate second hand and help create a fairer world.

A set of embroideries by Pamela Pavitt, these beautiful, intricate works invite us to reflect on questions of climate justice, and get inspired to take action. Many thanks to Westhill Endowment for the loan of this exhibition. Pamela Pavitt was an Elder of a United Reformed Church and trained as a textile artist at Bromley Art School. Pamela was inspired by her Christian faith in creating these works, but the themes will resonate with people of all faiths and none.

Film based on Isabella Tree's book 2018 book of how she and husband Charlie Burrell completely changed the management of the 1400 acre Knepp estate in East Sussex he had inherited. The soil had been impoverished by over-intensive cultivation so they experimented with returning it to the wild using longhorn cattle, deer, Tamworth pigs, Exmoor ponies. The film is not a documentary but an artistic and intimate protrait of the wildlife that has thrived at Knepp - turtle doves, purple emperor butterflies, nightingales and the reintroduced storks and beavers.
It will be followed by an opportunity to reflect on rewilding in general and where there are opportunities to encourage wildlife locally at this time of global nature depletion.
Entry fee of £6 to cover costs (hall hire and licensing). Ice creams will be on sale and also a raffle.
Doors open at 7pm. Film starts at 7.30pm

Join our next Mothers* Rebellion for climate justice!
Mothers* Rebellion is a global peaceful family-friendly protest where a circle of mothers* (and allies) sit down together in a public place, facing the passers-by, with signs sharing the reason they are there.
The climate crisis is already affecting mothers and children across the globe, and we will not give up the fight for a sustainable present and future for the current and coming generations.
The protest will be followed by the Kidical Mass family-friendly cycle ride leaving Guildhall Square at 2.30pm and heading to the Common for a picnic from 3pm.
In collaboration with Perins School, New Leaf Alresford are hosting a screening of the film ‘Six Inches of Soil’, as part of Winchester Green Week activities - to celebrate and promote sustainable living.
The film tells the inspiring story of British farmers standing up against the industrial food system and transforming the way they produce food - to heal the soil, benefit our health and provide for local communities.
It will be screened using new state of the art projection equipment in the Perins Main Hall followed by a discussion and Q&A session with a panel of local experts.
As part of Sustainable Fashion Week we will once again be running our social media campaign to promote far and wide the best preloved fashion photos and reels from our members’ charity shops. We want to see sustainability, diversity and creativity.
When we give the word, start to send your best preloved fashion photos with some explanatory text, and your reels, to us. More details in the coming weeks.
We’ll post your creations across all of our channels throughout 23 – 29 September, and with your, and our sustainable fashion friends’ help in sharing we can show how and why charity retail excels in the wider fashion retail scene.
Hampshire’s unique, long-term solution to homelessness is inviting people behind the scenes of its Bar End community throughout Winchester Green Week.
On a tour of Emmaus Hampshire facilities, visitors will: see the launch of the Emmaus Carbon Calculator which quantifies the CO2e savings on 80 different product categories; visit the Repair Shop – where Companions reuse, restore and upcycle furniture and homewares; visit its small Recycling Centre – where the community strips steel, aluminium, and copper from products it cannot sell and makes cash from metal dealers; view and buy pre-loved fashion and upcycled furniture; and meet staff and trustees to find out more about volunteering in the community.
The official launch of the Carbon Calculator takes place at 10am on Thursday 26 September. That day, trustees will be on hand to speak to visitors about volunteering and the charity will offer free tea and cake in its Green Roof Café.
The Environment Centre (tEC) is a local, independent charity which delivers air quality and energy efficiency projects across Hampshire. Air pollution is acknowledged by the UK Government as the largest environmental risk to public health as well as contributing to the climate crisis. One of tEC’s projects – delivered on behalf of Winchester City Council - aims to raise awareness around the impact of domestic wood burning on health.
You are warmly invited to join this talk which discusses local air quality and what we can do to breathe cleaner air and reduce emissions.
Responding to the ecological crisis isn’t only about asking, ‘what must I do?’, but also, ‘what sort of person am I called to be?’. There is lots we can learn from reflecting on the virtues and how they apply to us in our current context. So come and explore the values and virtues we need to live with resilience and active hope.
Dr Ruth Valerio will be speaking and she is Programmes, Partnerships & Advocacy Director, Embrace the Middle East. Unfortunately there is no parking available at The Wessex Centre.
Jewellery is often considered one of the world’s oldest art forms; it’s had a long time to develop processes, understanding, materials but also, unfortunately, do a fair bit of damage. Here is your introduction to Ethical Jewellery!
The session will begin with an overview of what’s going on in the world in the context of jewellery (making and purchasing). Part two of the session will feature a little insight into the industry: how to identify what your jewellery is made from. For the final part of the workshop, it is very important to separate what you want to keep from what you don't want any more, as the last section will see us melting some of your jewellery down and turning it into something new!
This workshop is three hours long. You have the choice of an afternoon (2-5pm) or an evening session (6-9pm).
Did you know that the greenest way to do your shopping is through a local veg box scheme? At Hampshire Veg Box all our produce is organic and as local as possible, with much of it grown on our very own market garden in the Winchester District.
The way we grow vegetables is not only giving back what it takes from the soil and environment but actually puts back more than it takes. Our focus on healthy soil sequesters carbon from the atmosphere into the ground and promotes biodiversity creating a beautiful ecosystem where nature thrives.
We want to reconnect people with where their food is grown, and that is why we offer volunteering opportunities. To us our staff and volunteers are the heart of our market garden and we couldn’t operate without you. Our volunteer days can give you regular time outside, improve physical and mental wellbeing, provide a day with other like-minded people or help you learn new skills. Upon signing up to volunteer we will see what you would like to get out of attending our sessions, and help you achieve that.
Join stylist Sarah Sullivan as she hosts this fabulous preloved fashion event. Kindly supported by The Brooks Centre Winchester it forms part of Winchester's Green Week. We want to inspire you to shop second hand, recycle, rewear and restyle rather than buy new.

We have suffered for decades with substandard cycling infrastructure, but we dare to dream of a better future for our children and grandchildren. Kidical Mass is a worldwide movement of cyclists from 0 to 99 years old, who take over the streets to reclaim the road space in colourful bicycle demonstrations. In 2023, Cycle Winchester affiliated with Kidical Mass UK, and we share their vision of a future where all children and young people can safely and independently use cycles as a mode of travel.
The team is hatching plans for a 2025 Mass Ride in late spring, or early summer. Meanwhile there may be an alternative, informal event on September 28th. Watch our website and our social media for further news.
Members of the Community Allotment will be there to show you round and answer any questions.
Who is the event for? Anyone interested in growing food, or seeing how a community can grow together. Children, under close supervision, are welcome to come and identify plants and insects.
Our plots are 2/3rds of the way down, with a sign on the left hand side. Free event. email Kitty on food@winacc.org.uk so we can look out for you.
Are you ready to re-fresh your wardrobe or home while making a positive impact on the planet? Shopping second-hand is a powerful way to reduce your carbon footprint and contribute to a more sustainable future. By extending the lifecycle of clothing items and homeware you are directly helping to reduce the demand for new production and so decreasing resource consumption, energy usage, and waste. The Nutshell will be running a PreLoved Sale.
Come and close out the season with the best of summer's blooms. I will demonstrate how to print flowers and other natural extracts directly onto silk fabric. This workshop will be an introduction to the basics of natural dyeing, where you will learn the most important steps, namely how to properly clean and
prepare the material to receive natural dyes and create textiles with long-lasting colours.
All materials will be provided, and we will be bundle dyeing on a 55x 55cm floaty square of 100% pongee silk.
